Cannabis plants grow in the clone room at Aurora Deutschland GmbH, a manufacturer of medical Cannabis products, in Leuna, Germany September 11, 2023. But some companies are trying to combat that like U.K.-based cultivator Glass Pharms. It claims to be the world's first firm to grow cannabis indoors in a carbon-neutral way. That is then used to heat and cool Glass Pharms' greenhouse. This means Glass Pharms' greenhouse facility does not take any electricity from the energy grid, nor does it rely on mains water.

3 Festive Main Dishes for Any Spring Party
  + stars: | 2024-03-29 | by ( Lidey Heuck | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: 1 min
After the quiet winter months, spring heralds the return of longer days and gathering over leisurely meals. The best dishes for those get-togethers are the ones that feel celebratory enough to serve to guests, but are simple enough to ensure you’re not spending all day in the kitchen. These three cheery mains — a salad that can be prepared in advance, a one-pot seafood stunner and a versatile grilled chicken — remind us that with the right recipes, hosting doesn’t have to be stressful. These recipes can be served alone for low-key occasions, but for a particularly memorable meal, make all three. The clams are a lovely yet rustic first course, to be followed by the chicken as a hearty centerpiece and the salad as a refreshing side dish.

On Sunday, crews in Memphis, Tennessee continued to work around the clock to find and fix broken pipes that were causing low water pressure throughout the system. Elsewhere, freezing rain, sleet and high wind gusts later Sunday would make traveling in parts of Kansas and Oklahoma particularly treacherous, the National Weather Service said. “With no additional replenishment of arctic air from Canada, a steady warm-up is in store for the mid-section of the country,” the weather service said. Trees and power lines already coated with ice could topple if they get more, the National Weather Service warned. “Stay safe out there over the next several days as our region tries to thaw out,” the weather service said.

Biden Administration Pushes to ‘Get the Lead Out’
  + stars: | 2023-11-30 | by ( Kris Maher | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: 1 min
Environmental groups and others have been pushing for years to strengthen regulations that require utilities to reduce lead in drinking water. Photo: Rogelio V. Solis/Associated PressThe Biden administration wants to require utilities to replace all lead drinking-water pipes across the U.S. within the next 10 years, the biggest push in decades by the federal government to eliminate lead from the nation’s tap water. The Environmental Protection Agency made that proposal public Thursday, as part of a series of proposed regulatory changes involving lead in drinking water. More than nine million households receive water through lead service lines, the pipes that connect water mains to homes, the agency said.

It is the strongest overhaul of lead rules in more than three decades, and will cost billions of dollars. The Biden administration has previously said it wants all of the nation’s roughly 9 million lead pipes to be removed, and rapidly. Lead pipes connect water mains in the street to homes and are typically the biggest source of lead in drinking water. The Biden administration says investment is vital to fix this injustice and ensure everyone has safe, lead-free drinking water. A home with dangerous lead levels can be next to a house with no lead exposure at all.

Grieving parents like me are told to gird themselves for anniversaries and holidays, for birthdays and religious events. Each holiday centered on family is now barbed. I love a holiday focused on gratitude and gathering, of food and camaraderie. I tend to cook when I’m sad or worried, and I’ve been both, a lot, of late. Living in loss is heavy; it is made all the more so by a world overflowing with grief, and parental pain.

Bernstein said he is hopeful “that as we remove lead pipes, we’re going to see the numbers continue to fall. “CDC’s work was used in other cities with elevated water lead levels to dampen citizen concerns,” the congressional report said. Joe Cotruvo, a former director of the Drinking Water Standards Division at EPA, said the existing regulations work and should be credited with significantly reducing lead in drinking water, they just aren’t properly enforced. Lead pipes in both cities were rapidly removed and lead levels dropped.

But it’s a looming catastrophe for New Orleans, where officials estimate that tens of thousands of the city’s water pipes are made of lead. Many residents aren’t even aware they have lead pipes supplying their drinking water, said Jessica Dandridge, executive director of the Water Collaborative of Greater New Orleans. Dandridge’s organization works both on water quality issues around the city’s lead pipes and stormwater management and flood control, and they are one of BlueConduit’s local partners working to map the pipes. As a result, lead drinking pipes are all over the country; some national estimates say the total number of pipes is around 9.2 million. It’s “almost a sleuthing or detective (work), trying to find out where the pipes are and where they go,” New Orleans City Councilmember JP Morrell told CNN.

The flooding around the Mapocho river has also cut off routes leading towards the Pacific Ocean, hitting families who live on its banks and leaving small towns isolated. This led authorities to declare a "red alert" and order preventive evacuations in various towns in the south of Santiago. "This is the worst weather front we have had in 10 years," Santiago metropolitan area governor Claudio Orego said. The flooding of the Mapocho river has also affected parts of the busy route that connects Santiago with the key port city of Valparaiso. In mountainous tourist areas around the Maipo river, authorities have since Thursday been moving residents out of their towns due to the risk of landslides and further flooding.
